To our sweet loving supportive community,
After nearly 9 years The Sanctuary will be closing its doors. Aleks and I built this beautiful community in the hopes that it would change lives, transform the way birth was managed and perceived in this country, we believed that Los Angeles deserved a birth center, we envisioned a community for families with collaboration of wonderful practitioners. A place for lectures and movie nights and prenatal yoga and cloth diapers and mama's simply hanging out together. We were able to see each of these visions come to fruition...and it has been a beautiful and miraculous time. But the time has come for us to pursue other dreams and as wonderful as The Sanctuary has been, it is all encompassing to run such a large business with so many moving parts. Personally, I simply want to spend as much time as I can with my growing children before they are off to college and creating their own families. Also, I am joyfully pursuing getting my license as Midwife, a long held dream. I feel so honored to have watched this dream become a reality and be part of so many amazing families journey as they expand. I will be here in LA both natural birth and business consulting, teaching, doula-ing and in 2016 hopefully receiving my license. I would love for those of you inclined to stay in touch and reach out should you ever need me. (I LOVE seeing your babies grow...hint hint...love your photos!)
We have had many wonderful practitioners come and go over the years...We trained many students, some who went on to be midwives. But there were a few dedicated individuals that have been with us almost since the beginning and those I would like to acknowledge specifically and give you an update on what’s next for them as well.
Jacqueline Little, LM -Started with us as a volunteer in 2008 eventually evolving from student to midwife. She worked with us until last year when she moved up north and recently got engaged to her love. Jacqueline is in private practice in Monterrey and engaged to be married this summer.
Kim Durdin, IBCLC- has been a rock in our company since 2008. She created and managed the amazing moms group, childbirth education class, and many more programs. Kim came to us as a Lactation Consultant and childbirth educator and became so much more. Kim is also in the process of getting her license as a midwife and will continue to provide Lactation services, mom’s group and childbirth education privately in her home. email@example.com
Luree Nicolson- Amazed us with her skills as a medical hypnotherapist...she made Aleks and I believers as we watched women sleep through labor and trick us with their calm demeanor in active labor. Luree will continue to see clients privately. Luree42@yahoo.com
Heather Schwarz, LM also started with us as a student midwife and became one of the midwives on our team. She has been with us through thick and thin, and I am in constant awe of the commitment and selflessness in which she provides care to families. Heather was also responsible for creating our doula training and referral service. Heather continues to practice privately as a midwife here on the West side, providing “Sanctuary like” services at home. firstname.lastname@example.org
Stuart Fischbein MD ...What can we say, but what an amazing ride it has been to be part of this man's journey. A true birth hero. We have been able to give women opportunities that are unique because of the courage he has shown in continuing to offer women the ability to birth their babies in the way they see fit. Stuart will be continuing to support women with Breech, Twins and multiple VBACs along with families simply wanting a home birth with an MD out of his Century City office.
Nicole La Cour- Nicole was a two-time client and then came on staff as an administrator. She is not a birth worker (yet) but has held down the fort for us in MANY different capacities until the very last day. We are immensely grateful for all that she has been for us over the years. We could not have provided all of this amazing care to clients with out her dedication and steadiness.
Gretchen Goddard- Also joined us as a client back in 2007. Gretchen helped jump start our non-profit organization with baby in tow and was an administrative goddess, our biggest fan in the community and now a wonderful member of our teaching staff. Gretchen is expecting her third baby and will continue to teach Parenting and Childbirth Education classes on the Westside. email@example.com
Again, there have been so many other wonderful people that have graced us with their gifts over the years. We wish them all immense success in their next adventures and from the bottom of our hearts...thank every family, every baby, every practitioner that came though our doors. It has been an extraordinary ride of growth and expansive learning for each of us.

I also want to take a moment to express my gratitude for the last 9 years of collaborative work relationships and the many families we have served.
When we started this company, we did so from a vision of excellence- we were driven to create something that was only a dream. Somehow, it all came together and it was freakin’ awesome! All the people also driven by the same dream came out of the woodwork and brought their gifts to the table. I was awed at the environment that we created, for our clients; I saw prenatal care at its best. For our practitioners, I witnessed midwives living balanced lives; it was incredible considering the environment I had been trained in and the health issues that plague many midwives.
And for myself, I was able to truly grow into the midwife I am today, having worked side by side with so many truly wonderful practitioners; I know I am able to give better care as a result of the refinement I have received inside of the collaborative model. But the thing that I am most proud of is the amazing relationships that have resulted in those who came together under our roof. For me, knowing that I have been a part of creating such supportive sisterhood, I feel a sense of accomplishment.
So, the decision to close The Sanctuary was not an easy one to make. Turning 40 last year was a turning point for me; I felt in my soul I needed even more. I think I am one of those people that constantly needs newness in order to stay engaged. Its one of the reasons I love birth so much-its constantly reminding me to stay present. I have felt that my joy resided in giving client care, not in all the details of running a business. As well, there are other things I would like to pursue both in the field of birth and out, and with the amount of time that The Sanctuary required, I found I wasn’t able to pursue the next installment of dreams;)
I am also considering a move to Northern California (Marin) this fall. Its one of the places that when I visit, I feel at home. I am drawn into the beauty of the place, the trees and clean air, and proximity to great hikes, San Francisco, spring water, great schools and twice as much rain as Los Angeles! Right now, I am looking forward to taking the summer off to travel to Europe to visit Ireland, Holland and back to Italy, and to do some cross country exploration with my daughter Juno. For sure I will be around doing births through the month of June and am always reachable on Facebook or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
My heart is full of gratitude for all the lessons and gifts this incredible adventure has afforded me. Thank you from the deepest reaches of my soul for allowing me to participate in your life in some way.
